Chemistry Tutor — O-Level 6092 & A-Level H1/H2

Most Chemistry grades in Singapore are lost long before organic chemistry starts. They are lost at the mole. We are hiring tutors willing to go back there and rebuild it.

Eduprime is hiring Chemistry tutors for O-Level (6092) and A-Level H1/H2 (9476). The students who come to us are rarely lazy — most of them are carrying a stoichiometry gap from Sec 3 that every later topic quietly compounds. Mole ratios that were never secure make limiting reagent work guesswork, which makes titration arithmetic guesswork, which makes energetics and equilibrium calculations unreadable. We want tutors who diagnose that and go back to fix it, rather than drilling ten-year-series papers over a foundation that will not hold. From there the syllabus opens out: qualitative analysis and the exact phrasing that earns the observation mark, titration technique and the arithmetic that follows it, and organic mechanisms taught as electron movement with curly arrows drawn the way the examiner expects to see them — tail on the electron source, head on where the pair goes. Lessons are one-to-one or in small groups, at the family's home or online. We match you by level and neighbourhood, and you are paid hourly in SGD, reliably.

Why chemistry tutors stay with us

  • You are given room to diagnose before you teach. If a J1 student cannot balance a redox half-equation, we back you to spend the first sessions there instead of forcing the pace of the school's scheme of work.
  • We match by level as well as subject. An H2 Paper 4 planning specialist and a Sec 3 mole-concept rebuilder are not the same tutor, and we do not pretend they are.
  • NIE-trained tutors and MOE ex-teachers are preferred and sit at the upper end of the range — real familiarity with how 6092 and 9476 scripts are marked is worth money here.
  • Practical coaching is treated as a valued specialism rather than an afterthought. Tutors who can talk a student through a genuine qualitative analysis sequence or a planning question are in demand every exam cycle.
  • You choose your own load. Some of our chemistry tutors take two assignments a week around a full-time job; others build a full timetable across several neighbourhoods.

The role

Inside a chemistry lesson here

  • Diagnose where the quantitative chain actually broke — moles, concentration, limiting reagent, percentage yield — and rebuild it before moving forward, even if that means going two years back in the syllabus.
  • Teach qualitative analysis as language as well as chemistry: students must write what they saw, not what they concluded. 'White precipitate, soluble in excess aqueous sodium hydroxide' earns the observation mark; 'it's aluminium' does not.
  • Drill titration properly — rough run then accurate runs, concordant readings, the reasoning behind rinsing the burette with the solution it will deliver — and then the mole arithmetic that hangs off the average titre.
  • Teach organic mechanisms as electron movement. Nucleophilic substitution, electrophilic addition and addition-elimination should be reasoned through with correctly drawn curly arrows, rather than memorised as reagent-and-condition flashcards.
  • Prepare H2 candidates for Paper 4, including the planning question, which rewards a candidate who has designed an experiment before rather than one who has only read about experiments. O-Level candidates need the equivalent work for Paper 3, where planning is also assessed.
  • Report honestly to the family on what has improved and what has not, and flag early when a student needs more sessions or a different approach.

What we check before handing you a student

  • Strong personal results in Chemistry at the level you want to teach — a good A-Level H2 grade as a minimum for O-Level work, and a degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, pharmacy, life sciences or medicine for A-Level work.
  • Genuine command of the current syllabus, including the 2026 O-Level 6092 content structure and the A-Level H1/H2 requirements. If you last sat the paper some years ago, be ready to re-read the current specification before your first lesson.
  • Comfort with the practical side. You should be able to work through a qualitative analysis table without looking it up, and explain a planning question's variables, controls and safety reasoning clearly.
  • Patience with the unglamorous parts. A tutor who resents spending three sessions on mole calculations because they would rather be teaching organic synthesis is the wrong fit for most of our students.
  • Reliability with schedules, and willingness either to travel to the family's home or to run a stable online setup with a shared writing surface — mechanisms and working cannot be taught by voice alone.

Pay

What the hour is worth

S$40 – S$100 per hour

Rates depend on level, your credentials and the format. O-Level 6092 one-to-one sits toward the lower and middle of the range; A-Level H1/H2 work, especially Paper 4 practical and planning coaching, sits higher. NIE-trained tutors and MOE ex-teachers are preferred and earn at the upper end. This is flexible part-time contract work, paid hourly in SGD, reliably.

How it works

From your application to your first titration lesson

  1. 01

    Send us your application

Apply through the contact form on this site. Tell us which levels you can teach — O-Level 6092, H1, H2 — and be specific about where you are strongest, whether that is organic mechanisms, physical chemistry calculations or practical work.

  2. 02

    We screen and verify

Our team checks your background and verifies the subjects and experience you have listed. For chemistry we will ask which levels you have actually taught and how you handle a student who cannot do mole calculations, because that answer tells us a great deal.

  3. 03

    We match you to students

You are matched by subject and area. A tutor confident with H2 equilibrium and Paper 4 planning goes to J1 and J2 assignments; a tutor who is excellent at rebuilding Sec 3 foundations goes where that is needed, near where you live or online.

  4. 04

    Agree the schedule and begin

You settle timing and location directly with the family and start teaching. Our team stays reachable afterwards for scheduling changes, payment questions and support if a student's needs shift part-way through the year.

Questions

Questions chemistry tutors ask us

Can I teach only O-Level Chemistry, or only A-Level?

Either is fine, and we would rather you were honest about it. H2 Chemistry asks for reasoning in equilibrium, kinetics and organic synthesis that goes well past 6092, and a tutor stretched beyond their depth becomes obvious to a JC student within two lessons. Tell us your true ceiling and we will match inside it.

Do I need to be able to run practical sessions?

No — you will not have a school laboratory. What matters is that you can coach the written and procedural side: qualitative analysis observations and their exact phrasing, titration method and concordance, and for H2 students the planning question in Paper 4. Tutors who are strong here get more assignments, particularly as practical exams approach.

Will I be asked to teach Physics or Biology as well?

Only if you tell us you can. Many science tutors in Singapore get pushed into combined-science assignments they are not comfortable with. We verify subjects individually, so if you register as Chemistry only, that is what you will be matched to.

How do you handle a student whose real problem is Maths, not Chemistry?

It happens constantly — the mole is an arithmetic and proportion problem before it is a chemical one, and shaky algebra resurfaces in pH, Kc and rate calculations. Rebuild the numeracy inside the chemistry context; that is part of the job here, and we will not push you to skip it just to keep pace with the school.

Are students usually behind, or are they chasing distinctions?

Both. Some families come to us after a failed prelim and need the foundation rebuilt; others have a B and want an A, where the gap is usually precision — mechanism arrows, observation wording, significant figures and units in calculations. We tell you which situation you are walking into before you accept the assignment.

I am a full-time undergraduate. Can I take assignments?

Yes, if your own Chemistry results are strong and you can commit to a stable weekly slot. Undergraduates in chemistry, chemical engineering, pharmacy and medicine often teach O-Level 6092 well because the syllabus is still fresh for them. A-Level assignments usually go to graduates and to NIE-trained or ex-MOE tutors.

Ready when you are

Ready to teach Chemistry properly?

If you would rather rebuild a student's grasp of the mole than paper over it with another ten-year-series paper, we want to hear from you. Applications go through the contact form on this site.
