Physics tuition in Singapore lives on two things students rarely practise: the definition, and the method mark. A student arrives having memorised that force equals mass times acceleration and cannot tell you what one newton is. Another solves for the current correctly but loses marks because the answer never named the physical principle the examiner was listening for. Eduprime is hiring Physics tutors to fix exactly that — drilling definitions until they are precise, structuring answers the way the mark scheme reads them, and teaching the practical paper as a skill rather than an afterthought. Much of the work is unlearning. If that appeals to you more than racing through a topic list, this is your role.

Why this subject rewards a serious tutor

  • Physics is where careless teaching shows immediately. A student who has been given formulas without definitions cannot survive a 'state and explain' question, and you will be the first person to make them notice.
  • You get the whole arc: O-Level 6091 kinematics, moments, thermal physics, waves, electricity and radioactivity, through to H2 9478 where fields, oscillations and quantum have to be taught as one connected idea rather than twelve separate chapters.
  • The practical is genuinely teachable and almost nobody teaches it. Reading a vernier scale and a micrometer screw gauge, respecting the uncertainty in a measurement, plotting a line the data actually supports, writing a conclusion an examiner can award — these are trainable marks worth 20% of the grade at both O-Level and H2.
  • Small group and one-to-one work only. You are never managing a lecture hall, so you can stop mid-derivation and ask the question that exposes what the student really believes about tension or the normal force.
  • Eduprime pays hourly in SGD, on schedule. You are not chasing invoices or absorbing a large cut of your own rate.

The role

The teaching itself

  • Rebuild the definitions from the ground up — the newton, the volt, the ohm, gravitational field strength, specific heat capacity — so a student can state them in exam wording rather than a paraphrase that loses the mark.
  • Teach answer structure explicitly: name the principle, apply it, then conclude. Show students where method marks live in a multi-step numerical answer and why laying out the working still scores when the final number is wrong.
  • Drill free-body diagrams, vector resolution and sign conventions until they are automatic. Most O-Level mechanics errors are a missing arrow or a lost minus sign, not a conceptual gap.
  • Prepare students properly for the practical: O-Level 6091 Paper 3 across its two 55-minute sections, and H2 9478 Paper 4 over 2 hours 30 minutes, including the spreadsheet-based data analysis the 2026 syllabus expects — trendlines, gradients and areas under a curve handled in software rather than by hand.
  • Run H2 candidates through full past-year papers under real time pressure, especially Paper 3 with its long structured Section A and free-response Section B, and mark them against the actual scheme instead of a feeling.
  • Report honestly to parents on what changed — which topic is now secure, which definition is still shaky — without promising a grade.

Who tends to do well in this role

  • Strong command of the Singapore syllabus you are teaching: 6091 for secondary, H1 8867 or H2 9478 for JC. H2 tutors should be comfortable with fields, capacitance, electromagnetic induction and quantum physics, and confident with calculus-level reasoning where the syllabus expects it.
  • The patience to correct a definition ten times without irritation. Physics tutoring is repetition with precision, and a tutor who rushes past the wording leaves marks on the table.
  • Practical fluency — you have actually handled callipers, a micrometer screw gauge, springs, meters and pulleys, and can talk about uncertainty as a real thing rather than a formula to quote.
  • NIE-trained tutors and former MOE teachers are preferred and are matched at the upper end of the rate. Strong graduate tutors with a physics or engineering background and real tutoring experience are very welcome.

Pay

Rate and what moves it

S$40 – S$100 per hour

Paid hourly in SGD, on time. Where you sit in the band depends on the level you teach and your credentials: secondary 6091 work sits lower in the range, H2 9478 and practical-focused preparation sit higher, and NIE-trained tutors and MOE ex-teachers are placed at the upper end. Rates are agreed per assignment before you start, with no surprise deduction after the fact.

How it works

From application to your first lesson

  1. 01

    Send us your application

Apply through the contact form on this site. Tell us which papers you can carry — 6091 only, or H1 and H2 9478 as well — and whether you are confident teaching the practical.

  2. 02

    We check the background

Our team screens your background and verifies the subjects and teaching experience you have listed. For Physics we look closely at how you handle definitions, working and the practical, because that is where students actually lose marks.

  3. 03

    You get matched

We match you with students by subject and area, so a JC candidate needing H2 fields and quantum reaches a tutor who teaches that half of the syllabus, and a Secondary 3 student is not handed to someone pitching at A-Level.

  4. 04

    Agree the schedule and begin

You settle timing and format directly with the family — home or online, one-to-one or small group — then start teaching. Our team stays reachable for scheduling, payment and anything that needs sorting out.

Questions

Questions physics tutors ask us

Do I need to teach the practical paper, or can I stay theory-only?

You can take theory-only assignments, but tutors who teach the practical get matched faster and at better rates. It carries 20% of the grade at both O-Level 6091 Paper 3 and H2 9478 Paper 4, and very few tutors offer it seriously, so demand consistently outruns supply.

The 2026 H2 syllabus moved Paper 4 data analysis onto spreadsheets. Am I expected to know that?

For H2 assignments, yes. Candidates now handle their analysis in spreadsheet software — importing the data, plotting with a trendline, extracting a gradient, estimating an area under a curve — so a tutor still teaching only pencil-and-graph-paper technique is preparing students for a paper that has changed. If you are strong on the physics and rusty on the software, say so and we will match you accordingly.

Can I take both O-Level and JC students?

Many of our Physics tutors do. The teaching is quite different, though — 6091 is largely about precision in definitions and structured answers, while H2 needs you to connect energy, fields and quantum into one framework and to mark full papers against the real scheme. Tell us honestly where you are stronger and we will weight your assignments that way.

I am an engineer, not a trained teacher. Is that a problem?

No. A physics or engineering background plus real tutoring experience is a strong profile, particularly for mechanics and electricity. What we do check is that you know the Singapore syllabus wording, because a technically correct answer phrased outside the mark scheme still costs the student marks. NIE-trained tutors and MOE ex-teachers are preferred and sit at the top of the rate band, though that is not the only path in.

Do I have to prepare my own materials?

You choose your own approach and materials, which most Physics tutors prefer — diagnosing what a particular student misunderstands about tension or circuit behaviour is yours to do. We handle the matching, scheduling support and payment so your time goes into teaching.

How flexible is the commitment?

This is flexible part-time contract work. You set how many hours you can carry and which areas of Singapore you can travel to, or take online assignments only. Bear in mind that Physics students often want intensity to rise sharply as the written papers and the practical approach, so we will ask what you can realistically hold through that stretch.
