Maths Tutor — Primary Heuristics to JC Calculus

One road runs from the bar model to integration by substitution. We hire tutors who can teach anywhere along it, and who can find the exact point where a student fell off.

Maths is the subject where a student can be lost for two years before anyone notices, because arithmetic fluency hides a broken idea underneath. A P6 pupil who cannot set up a ratio problem usually did not fail at ratio; they never solidified part-whole thinking in P4. A Sec 3 student drowning in A-Maths differentiation is often still guessing at index laws. Eduprime hires maths tutors who diagnose backwards from the symptom, rebuild the load-bearing topic, and only then return to the paper the student failed. You will work across the Singapore ladder — the model method and PSLE heuristics, the E-Maths and A-Maths split at secondary, H1 and H2 at JC, plus IB Maths AA or AI and IGCSE for families in those tracks.

What makes this maths work worth doing

  • You teach the full arc rather than one exam year. A tutor who has carried a student from bar models to the R-formula understands why the model method is scaffolding for algebra, and can say so in a way that makes P5 feel purposeful.
  • The diagnosis is the craft. We expect you to spend a first lesson finding the real fracture — often three topics upstream of the one that got the red pen — instead of drilling the question type that failed.
  • Marking against the real scheme moves grades faster than more practice. The A-Maths (4049) syllabus states plainly that omission of essential working loses marks, so a student who learns to write the line they were skipping can gain marks without learning new content.
  • You are matched to students by level and area, so you never chase assignments, post in group chats, or bid against other tutors for work.
  • Hourly pay in SGD, on time. NIE-trained tutors and MOE ex-teachers are preferred and sit at the upper end of the band.
  • One-to-one and small groups, in the family's home or online — you choose the geography and the load that fit your week.

The role

The work, lesson by lesson

  • Run a diagnostic before you teach: put the student on unseen questions from the level below and watch where the method collapses, rather than accepting the school's topic label for the problem.
  • Teach the transition points that break students — model drawing to algebra around P6 and Sec 1, the E-Maths to A-Maths jump into trigonometric identities, partial fractions and calculus, and the JC step from pure technique into hypothesis testing and normal distribution in H2 Paper 2 Section B.
  • Set timed papers under real conditions, including the split that catches pupils out: PSLE Paper 1 without a calculator, Paper 2 with one, and the different pacing each demands.
  • Mark to the exam's own scheme — method marks for stated working, non-exact answers to 3 significant figures or 1 decimal place for angles at O-Level, correct notation for calculus and vectors — and show the student exactly where marks were lost rather than only whether the answer was right.
  • Build the presentation habits examiners reward: declaring the substitution, stating the domain, drawing the labelled diagram, and finishing the applied question that closes E-Maths Paper 2 and carries at least 12 marks in H2 Paper 1.
  • Report to parents in plain language — what topic was rebuilt, what the timed paper showed, and what changes next week.

Who tends to do well here

  • Fluency in the Singapore syllabus you claim: bar-model heuristics and the AL bands at PSLE, 4052 and 4049 at O-Level, H1 or H2 at JC, and IB Maths AA or AI where you offer it.
  • The ability to hold two representations of the same idea at once — a model drawing and an equation, a gradient function and the curve it came from — so a struggling student always has a second route in.
  • Patience with arithmetic and sign errors as a teachable pattern rather than carelessness to be scolded; most repeated maths mistakes are procedural habits, and procedures can be retrained.
  • Strong recent A-Level or degree-level mathematics, or real teaching experience with Singapore students. NIE training or MOE classroom experience is preferred and earns at the top of the band.
  • Reliability with schedules and honest reporting to families, including telling a parent when progress is slower than they hoped.

Pay

Rates for maths tutors

S$35 – S$90 per hour

Where you sit in the band depends on the level you teach and your credentials. Lower primary model-method work sits near the base; JC H2 and IB Maths HL, along with NIE-trained tutors and MOE ex-teachers, sit at the upper end. Paid hourly in SGD, on schedule, with no cut taken from the lessons we match you to.

How it works

From application to your first lesson

  1. 01

    Send us your maths range

Apply through the contact form on this site and tell us the exact span you can teach — primary heuristics only, E-Maths and A-Maths, H2, IB AA HL, or the full road from bar models to calculus.

  2. 02

We screen you and verify the syllabus you claim

Our team checks your background and confirms your subjects and teaching experience against the levels and papers you listed. Claiming both A-Maths and JC calculus means we verify both.

  3. 03

We match you to students by level and area

You are paired with students whose level fits what you actually teach and whose home fits your travel radius, or online if that suits you better. No hunting, no bidding.

  4. 04

Agree the schedule and start teaching

You settle timing and format directly with the family and begin. Our team stays reachable for scheduling changes, difficult parent conversations, and anything else that gets between you and the teaching.

Questions

Questions maths tutors ask before applying

Do I have to take both E-Maths and A-Maths students?

No. Plenty of our tutors take 4052 only and are honest that 4049 trigonometric identities and calculus sit outside their range. We match to what you verify, so an accurate narrow profile brings you better-fitting students than an inflated wide one.

I only studied H2 Maths myself — can I take primary students?

Only if you are willing to learn the model method properly. Strong mathematicians often try to shortcut a P5 pupil straight into algebra, which leaves the child unable to present working a PSLE marker will accept. If you take primary assignments, you teach the heuristics the way the syllabus builds them.

How much of the job is marking rather than explaining?

More than new tutors expect, and it is where much of the value sits. Marking a timed paper against the actual scheme — method marks, significant figures, stated working — usually reveals more than another hour of explanation would.

Can I teach IB Maths AA and AI, or IGCSE?

Yes. A minority of Singapore families sit international tracks, and tutors who can handle AA HL calculus or AI statistics are in genuine demand. Tell us on the form and we will verify and match accordingly.

Are lessons one-to-one or in groups?

Both. One-to-one suits diagnostic rebuilding, where a student's gap is specific to them; small groups work well for exam technique and timed practice, where students gain from seeing how a peer set up the same problem differently.

Do you provide worksheets and past papers?

You bring your own teaching material and question banks, which is normal for experienced maths tutors and keeps you in control of how difficulty progresses. Our team handles matching, scheduling and payment so your preparation time goes into the maths.
