A-Level Tutor — Teach JC1 and JC2 in Singapore

Junior College gives a student roughly eighteen teaching months before the promotional exams stop mattering and the A-Level papers start counting. Everything a JC candidate carries — three H2 subjects, a fourth content subject at H1 or H2, H1 General Paper, Mother Tongue, Project Work — has to be held at once, and the abstraction level jumps sharply from what they handled at O-Level. Eduprime matches A-Level tutors to the students inside that squeeze: JC1 students who have just discovered that their O-Level study method no longer works, and JC2 students who are tired and need someone efficient about what to drop.
What draws tutors to the JC years
- You get to teach your subject at the depth it deserves. H2 syllabuses reward real explanation, and a student who is about to read the subject at university will follow you there.
- The stakes make students coachable. JC2 candidates arrive knowing exactly why they are in the room, which changes the entire tone of a tutorial.
- Rates run from S$50 to S$120 per hour. A-Level work sits at the top of Singapore's tuition ladder because so few tutors can genuinely handle H2 content.
- NIE-trained tutors and MOE ex-teachers are preferred here and are placed at the upper end of that range.
- You choose your load. This is flexible part-time contract work — take a single JC2 Chemistry student on Saturday mornings, or build a full weekly schedule.
- You are paid hourly in SGD, on time, every cycle. That is a deliberate commitment on our side.
The role
Inside an Eduprime A-Level tutorial
- Teach at the H1 or H2 level your student is actually offering, and know the difference — the H1 syllabus is a genuine subset with its own paper structure, and coaching it as a diluted H2 wastes everyone's time.
- Drill structured answers and evaluation, especially in essay-marked subjects where a candidate who knows the content still loses marks on argument shape.
- Run past-year papers timed to the minute. Exam-hall pacing is a trainable skill and most JC students have never had it trained.
- Insist on shown method. A-Level markers award working, and students who compress steps in their head bleed marks they had earned.
- Triage honestly with JC2 students in the final months — decide with them which topics get consolidated and which get accepted as losses.
- Report progress to the family in plain language, so parents can see what changed between one month and the next.
What we look for in a JC-level tutor
- Strong personal results in the subject at A-Level, or a degree in it — for H2 teaching we need genuine command of the material, since JC students catch bluffing quickly.
- Working knowledge of how the University Admission Score is assembled under the current rules: three H2 subjects plus H1 General Paper, rebased to a maximum of 70, with the fourth content subject and Mother Tongue counted only when they improve the total.
- Understanding that Project Work is now Pass/Fail and sits outside the UAS, while remaining a pass a student must have to qualify. Students still worry about it, and you should be able to reassure them accurately.
- Patience with the JC1 transition. The step up in abstraction from O-Level is the most common reason a strong O-Level student stalls in their first JC year.
- Reliability — JC schedules are tight and a cancelled session in October cannot be recovered.

Where you land inside that band depends on the subject, whether you are teaching at H1 or H2, your track record with A-Level candidates, and your credentials. NIE-trained tutors and MOE ex-teachers sit at the upper end. Payment is hourly in SGD and made reliably — we treat late payment as a failure on our side.

Questions A-Level tutors ask us
Can I tutor only H1, or only one subject?
Yes. Plenty of our tutors take H1 subjects exclusively, and General Paper alone is a viable specialism — it carries 10 rank points inside a 70-point UAS and is frequently the weakest link for science-stream candidates.
Do I need to have sat the A-Levels in Singapore myself?
It helps considerably and is what most of our A-Level tutors bring, though a relevant degree plus demonstrable command of the current H2 syllabus can substitute. We verify subject knowledge either way.
How much does the 2026 scoring change affect what I teach?
It changes what you tell students to prioritise. With Project Work and the fourth content subject outside the base computation, coaching effort concentrates on the three H2 subjects and General Paper. Students who prepared under the older 90-point framing sometimes carry outdated assumptions, and you may need to correct them.
When is demand for A-Level tutors highest?
Two peaks. Requests climb early in the year as JC1 students hit the abstraction wall, then again from roughly mid-year as JC2 students move into serious A-Level preparation. Availability in the second half of the year is especially valuable.
Will I be teaching one-to-one or small groups?
Both exist. One-to-one is the more common arrangement at A-Level because subject combinations vary so widely between students, though small groups do come up where a few candidates share a subject and a schedule.
Is this employment or contract work?
Flexible part-time contract work. You accept the placements you want and set your own schedule with each family.
