Why tutor while you study

Built for NUS students

Kent Ridge sits on top of the west's tuition demand

Clementi, West Coast, Dover, Queenstown and Buona Vista are all one bus ride or one Circle Line stop from campus, and they are dense HDB estates where weekday evening tuition is routine. A 5pm in-person slot in Clementi costs you roughly the time it takes to get from LT27 down to the interchange.

Your reading week and papers land when schools have already closed

NUS holds reading week in mid-November and runs examinations through to early December, by which point MOE schools have finished their year-end papers and demand thins out on its own. You get the quiet stretch you need without abandoning a student mid-syllabus.

May to July is your long gap and their hardest stretch

Once Semester 2 examinations finish in early May, the NUS vacation runs until August and covers both the June school holidays and the build-up to prelims and PSLE. If you want to teach intensively for one block and then step back, that window is shaped for it.

Questions

Tutoring as an NUS student — FAQ

I stay in hall. Can I realistically take in-person assignments, or should I stay online?

Both work from Kent Ridge. From a hall or a UTown residential college the internal shuttle puts you at Kent Ridge MRT in minutes, and the Circle Line reaches Buona Vista, Holland Village and Botanic Gardens with no transfer, so west and central assignments are doable on a weeknight. If you head home to the east or north-east at weekends, say so and we will look for slots near there rather than near campus.

My lectures and tutorials are scattered across the week. Students are only free after 4pm — does that clash?

It usually helps. Most tuition sits between 4pm and 9pm on weekdays plus Saturday daytime, which is after NUS teaching has largely wound down. Send us your timetable once it settles after the add-drop round and we will only offer slots that fall outside your classes and labs. Lab-heavy semesters with long afternoon blocks are the tight case, and we would rather hand you weekend slots than have you cancel on a family.

I'm taking a Special Term course or doing an internship over the long vacation. Can I pause?

Yes, and tell us before you commit to a student rather than after. Special Term runs in blocks across May to July and internships tend to eat the same window, so we can plan around it. If the months are only partly free we will match you to fewer hours instead of dropping you entirely, and the family gets notice well in advance.

I'm based at Bukit Timah Campus, or on clinical postings at NUH. Does the west focus still fit me?

Bukit Timah Campus sits beside Bukit Timah, Sixth Avenue and the Newton fringe, which is one of the deepest tuition catchments in Singapore, so you are well placed without ever heading down to Kent Ridge. Clinical postings are the harder case, since rotations and call move week to week. For those we usually suggest online lessons or a single fixed Saturday student you can protect through the whole posting.

I'm in Year 2 and my A-Levels feel far away. What am I actually qualified to teach?

More than you assume, and we would rather you teach narrow and deep. NUS students commonly tutor H1 and H2 Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Economics, the O-Level or IB and IGCSE versions of whatever you sat, and Primary and Secondary subjects inside your field. We ask which papers you took and what you have covered at university, then match on that. Revisiting an H2 syllabus you scored well in is an evening's work; we will not put you in front of a subject you never studied.
