Why tutor while you study

Built for NTU students

The west is your catchment, and it is short

From Yunnan Garden a campus shuttle and one stop at Pioneer or Boon Lay puts you in Jurong West, Jurong East, Bukit Batok and Choa Chu Kang inside half an hour, so an evening lesson costs you an evening instead of a day. We prioritise assignments in that western belt for NTU tutors, and hand you island-wide online slots when you would rather stay on campus.

Engineering and science coursework maps onto A-Level papers

The mechanics, organic chemistry and calculus you are graded on in EEE, MSE, CBE and SPMS are the same content H2 Physics, Chemistry and Maths candidates are stuck on, one abstraction layer up. We match you to the modules you have actually cleared, so a materials student takes structure-and-bonding questions and a maths major takes vectors and complex numbers.

NIE trainees teach from day one

NIE sits on the same campus, which means student teachers can tutor between practicum blocks with pedagogy, MOE syllabus documents and marking rubrics already in hand. If you are on a Dip Ed, PGDE or BA/BSc Ed track, say so on the form and we will route you to the levels your teaching subjects cover.

Questions

Tutoring as an NTU student — FAQ

My timetable is scattered across a 12-hour day with labs and tutorials. Can I still take assignments?

Yes, because primary and secondary tuition happens after school anyway, mostly on weekday evenings from around 5pm and on weekends. Those slots sit outside a typical NTU lecture-lab-tutorial block, so the gaps you have between a morning lecture and a 4pm lab are rarely what a family wants. Send us your semester timetable when it stabilises after add-drop and we will only put assignments in front of you that fit the fixed blocks around it.

What happens to my students during recess week, exams and the vacation?

You tell your family in advance and we help you set the expectation. Most parents accept a pause or a reduced schedule across recess week and the exam period at the end of the semester, particularly since their own child sits WA and SA papers in the same months. Long vacation is the opposite problem: December and May to July are peak demand as families push holiday intensives, so tutors on special term or staying in hall over the break can pick up more hours rather than fewer.

I live in hall on campus. Is in-person tutoring realistic, or should I just teach online?

Both work from hall. Hall residents are already at the western end of the island, so a Jurong West or Bukit Batok flat is a manageable bus or MRT trip, and you are back before your hall's late-night activity anyway. If you have a booked study room or a quiet room in hall, online lessons let you teach a family in Punggol or Pasir Ris without the cross-island travel that would otherwise make the assignment impossible.

I am an NTU postgraduate or PhD student on a scholarship or stipend. Am I allowed to tutor?

That depends on the terms of your own award and your pass conditions, and it is your responsibility to check them with your school and with the university's student services before you accept an assignment. Research scholarships often cap outside work or require supervisor consent, and international students hold pass conditions that govern paid work. We ask you to confirm you are clear to work when you apply; we are an independent tuition provider with no affiliation to NTU and cannot grant or interpret that permission for you.

I am strong in Maths and Physics but I have never taught. What does the first assignment actually look like?

Usually one secondary or JC student, one or two sessions a week, working through their school's topical papers and past-year prelims rather than a syllabus you have to design. The work is diagnosing why a method breaks down, marking the paper, and telling the parent in plain language what changed. Knowing the content deeply is the hard half and you already have it; the teaching pattern for a single student is learnable inside the first month, and NIE-trained tutors in our pool tend to be the ones with a head start there.
